What is Emotional Health
and why does it matter?
Emotional health refers to your ability to understand, manage, and express your emotions effectively while maintaining connection to yourself. It is a key component of overall well-being and encompasses skills such as self-awareness, regulation, and the ability to build and sustain healthy relationships to yourself and others.
When someone is emotionally healthy, they:
Understand their emotions: They can notice and name what they’re feeling with clarity (emotional granularity).
Regulate their emotions: They can navigate intense emotions in constructive ways, rather than being overwhelmed or reactive.
Express emotions appropriately: They communicate their feelings in ways that deepen connection and understanding (versus letting their emotions take over and losing themselves in it)
Develop emotional resilience: They can make room for big feelings and navigate them effectively.
Create emotional safety: They foster environments where they and others feel seen and supported.
Emotional health doesn’t mean avoiding negative emotions like sadness or anger. It also doesn’t mean being happy all the time. Instead, it’s about acknowledging all emotions as valid and learning how to ride the waves in a way that supports personal growth and connection.
Your emotions are a vital part of who you are, but many of us have been taught to suppress, ignore, or fear them. The result? Anxiety, overwhelm, and a sense of feeling disconnected from ourselves and others.
Emotional health isn’t about controlling your emotions—it’s about understanding them, working with them, honoring them, and using them as guides to navigate your inner (and outer) life with clarity, calm, and confidence.
This is where Foundations for Emotional Health comes in.
